LOCAL NEWS & CITY UPDATES

🗳️ Election Day Is Next Monday, October 26

In less than a week, we choose the people who will make the calls on municipal budgets, taxes, infrastructure, public works, parks and recreation, land use and development, local by-laws and more for the next four years. Last time, most of us left that choice to somebody else.

In 2022, 102,261 of the Region's 403,558 eligible voters cast a ballot. That's 25.34 per cent, or about one in four. Here's how it broke down where you live:

  • Cambridge: 28.87 per cent (27,689 of 95,921)

  • Kitchener: 20.26 per cent (34,658 of 171,025)

  • North Dumfries: 18.52 per cent (1,558 of 8,419)

  • Waterloo: 27.18 per cent (22,435 of 82,557)

  • Wellesley: 24.15 per cent (2,029 of 8,402)

  • Wilmot: 40.35 per cent (7,002 of 17,352)

  • Woolwich: 34.7 per cent (6,890 of 19,882)

💧 Mannheim Water Capacity Is Arriving Faster Than Expected

If you've been with Community Loop for a while, you know we've been following the Mannheim water situation closely. It's been an ongoing concern for a lot of residents, and it affects what's possible in Waterloo Region right now and how much room we have to grow in the future. The latest news is the kind we've been waiting for: the Region has brought new capacity online three years faster than expected.

  • A pilot using a modular container at the Mannheim Water Treatment Plant has put 20 L/s of new capacity into the drinking water system.

  • Three more containers are on site and being connected. Once they are running, the Region expects 200 L/s to come online by July 2027.

  • In total, 50 L/s is available to allocate in 2026, enough for about 28,500 people or a mix of homes and jobs, with each city and township deciding how to use its share.

  • That 2026 allocation covers roughly 80 per cent of the residential demand expected in the Mannheim Service Area through 2031.

  • More capacity is planned for 2027 and beyond.

Water projects like this traditionally take five to ten years, so a faster route is news for current residents and for the growth still to come. Region of Waterloo | Water Capacity Information Hub

🏠 Region Approves a 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Plan

Homelessness is one of the biggest issues in Waterloo Region. It shows up on our streets, at the council table and in the courts. On Wednesday, October 14, Regional Council approved the 10-year plan that will guide what happens next.

  • The plan pulls four divisional plans under one direction. Its priorities are delivering more homes faster, more deeply affordable and non-market housing, mixed-income models, preserving the affordable housing we already have, and ending chronic homelessness.

  • From January 2025 to June 2026, 1,143 people moved from homelessness into permanent housing. Nearly half had experienced chronic homelessness.

  • Over the same stretch, the number of people becoming chronically homeless fell 37 per cent, and the number of people entering homelessness fell 5 per cent.

  • Supportive housing grew too: 49 new rent supplements for people leaving unsheltered homelessness, and 41 units opened at Indwell's Magnolia Flats. An eviction prevention program kept 93 households in their homes.

  • The Region's 2026 budget for homelessness is $68.6 million, and about two-thirds of it comes from the municipal tax levy.

The Region's own report is clear that the work isn't done. Homelessness is still rising, only more slowly than before. In 2025, for every 100 people who left the system, 124 entered it. Without significant additional investment, the Region expects homelessness to grow faster starting in 2027. Region of Waterloo | PECH progress update | 10-Year Plan

🏢 Wilmot Gets a Police Community Office in Baden

Wilmot has been asking for a police presence in town since its old local station closed, and now there is a place to stop in.

  • Waterloo Regional Police Service has opened a community office inside the Wilmot Recreation Complex in Baden, in partnership with the Township.

  • The plan is regular drop-in times, meetings and outreach.

  • Residents, community groups and officers can all use it as a meeting space.

  • It follows similar spaces in North Dumfries and Wellesley and is part of the Service's Rural Policing Strategy.

  • Mayor Natasha Salonen says residents have pushed for a visible police presence since the old station closed, and the Township spent four years working with the Service to make this happen.
