Happy Tuesday, Waterloo Region!

What a week that was. Canada's historic World Cup run came to an end in Houston, Canada Day arrived with a surprise storm that threw a wrench into some plans, and the rest of the Region adjusted and moved on, because that's what we do.

The East Coast Kitchen Party was the kind of night that has people already asking when the next one is. Three stages, lobster rolls, a crowd that didn't want to go home. If you missed it, put it on the list for next year. If you were there, you already know.

This week somehow has even more going on. We've rounded it all up below.

Welcome to anyone reading this for the first time. Tell a friend, tell a neighbour, tell whoever just popped into your head. No need to keep it to yourself. They can subscribe here.

  • Lindsay volunteered with children's services while working three jobs and writing a master's thesis on healing from trauma. She had no idea she was nominated. This week's SEEN story.

  • Saturday July 11 might be the most event-packed single day this Region has ever had.

🌟 SEEN — Lindsay's Story

In partnership with Midtown Yoga and Pilates

Last week we introduced you to Laura. This week, it's Lindsay.

Lindsay was nominated by the Volunteer Services Manager at Family and Children's Services Waterloo Region, where she volunteers.

Out of respect for the young person Lindsay works with, and in keeping with the nature of children's services, we're keeping the details of that relationship private. What we can tell you is this: Lindsay has shown up, consistently, for someone who needed her to. Week after week, for two years. Building trust slowly, the way it actually has to be built. If you know anything about the work done inside children's services, you know what that takes and it’s not easy.

Lindsay is also working three jobs. And completing a full-time master's degree. Her thesis is on how meditation and yoga can help heal a nervous system that has been shaped by trauma.

Let that sit for a second.

She spends her volunteer hours showing up for someone navigating exactly that. And in her own time, she is studying the science of how people heal from it. We don't think that's a coincidence. We think that's a calling.

When we reached out to tell Lindsay she had been selected, and what Midtown was offering her, her response made it clear this wasn't just a nice gesture. It was exactly what she needed, right now, in the middle of all of it.

We want to thank the person who nominated her and took the time to make sure Lindsay was seen. That nomination mattered.

Lindsay. This community sees you.

Chloe's story is coming next week.

Thank you again to Midtown Yoga and Pilates for making all of this possible.

🎷 KW Symphony receives $70,000 operating grant from Kitchener.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony is getting a financial lift from the city as it works to rebuild after emerging from bankruptcy in 2023.

  • Kitchener Council approved a one-time $70,000 operating grant to support the symphony's ongoing recovery

  • The city had previously funded the symphony annually, with contributions as high as $400,000 per year, but the symphony lost eligibility for regular arts funding after declaring insolvency in 2023

  • The grant will help fund two new part-time operations positions and strengthen the organization's capacity

  • Council agreed to consider further funding next year, tied to how much revenue the symphony generates in the 2026-27 season, with reporting requirements similar to those applied to THEMUSEUM

🚣 Victoria Park Lake boating is back.

Canoeists and kayakers can return to Victoria Park Lake after the City partially reversed a recreation ban introduced in early June.

  • In early June, new signs went up at Victoria Park Lake banning all recreation on the water, including boating, swimming, and skating, because the lake is part of the city's stormwater management system.

  • Community members pushed back, and the City announced on July 6 that boating is now permitted again, recognizing the lake's "historically differentiated status" as a unique recreational feature in the urban core.

  • Swimming, fishing, and skating remain prohibited.

  • The City noted it will continue to assess the site and communicate any future changes through official channels and signage.

Mortgage & Rate Watch

Rate

Bank of Canada Overnight Rate

2.25%

Prime Rate (most major banks)

4.45%

Rate announcement coming Wednesday, July 15. The Bank of Canada makes its next rate decision alongside the release of the full Monetary Policy Report. With core inflation holding near 2% despite a 3.2% headline CPI in May, most major banks continue to expect a hold at 2.25%. The July 20 CPI release for June data will also arrive five days after the announcement and may shift the conversation heading into the fall.

What to watch: if the Bank's statement signals concern about persistent energy-driven inflation, fixed rates may edge up at lenders even without a rate change. If the tone is cautious about growth, some relief on fixed rates is possible. A hold with a neutral tone is the base case for most economists.

Home Tip of the Week

Rib and Beer Fest is this weekend and summer is fully in swing. If your deck or patio furniture has been sitting in the heat and rain all week, give your cushions and fabric furniture a quick check before the next gathering. Extended heat combined with humidity creates ideal conditions for mildew to develop in outdoor fabric, especially on cushion backs and underside seams. A quick wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution cleans it and prevents it from coming back. Let everything dry fully in the sun before putting it away or covering it overnight.
