Happy Tuesday, Waterloo Region!

The AC gets a break this week. After a stretch of heat that had us all running for shade, cooler air has arrived and it brought the rain with it. Expect a few days of wet conditions through Friday… or don't, because if the forecast guarantees anything, it's that the weather will be absolutely nothing like what they said it would be 🤷.

If you have outdoor plans, it may be worth having a backup plan, emphasis on may, because again who really knows 🤷. The FIFA watch parties at the Kitchener Market piazza and Gaslight District are great options, but this might also be the perfect excuse to find your favourite pub, grab a seat, and watch the match the old-fashioned way.

Father's Day is this Sunday. We have a full list of ideas for Dad below. And if someone in your life deserves to be recognized for what they quietly do for others SEEN nominations are open through June 25. Keep reading.

🌟 SEEN — Nominations Are Rolling In

In partnership with Midtown Yoga and Pilates

Last week we asked you to notice the quiet ones. This week, the first nominations arrived and they are exactly why we started this campaign. People are stepping up to say “I see you” to neighbours, volunteers, friends and family who give without fanfare. Will you join them? It only takes a few minutes. Here’s who’s been nominated so far.

People who show up every single week for years, quietly, without anyone asking them to, delivering food to families who need it, staying until the last task is done, making sure nothing falls through the cracks. People who have poured decades into their communities, mentoring kids, building programs, showing up for people with special needs and mental illness who had no one else in their corner.

Someone who is facing one of the hardest things a person can face, and who somehow still shows up for everyone around them. Still volunteers. Still gives. Still puts others first every single day.

A person quietly holding a family together through a crisis, researching, advocating, sitting in waiting rooms, starting fundraisers, running meal trains, moderating community spaces to keep them safe. Doing all of it while raising kids and working full time.

These are the people in our community. And people who love them that took the time to tell us.

Nominations are open through June 25. If someone just came to mind, that is not a coincidence.

Enjoying Community Loop? Forward this to your friends, family and coworkers (if you like them), or anyone who wants to stay in the loop. It only takes a second and it means a lot to us. Subscribe here if you're not already.

City of Kitchener

🏆 Kitchener receives $8 million for surpassing housing targets three years in a row. Kitchener is building more homes than the province asks for, and the funding that comes with it goes back into the city. This is a significant win in a housing market where supply is a constant challenge.

  • Kitchener broke ground on 3,005 new homes in 2025, surpassing its provincial target for the third consecutive year

  • The $8 million comes from Ontario's Building Faster Fund, which rewards municipalities based on homes built the previous year

  • "This is the third year that the City of Kitchener has exceeded their housing targets through this program. It's an impressive achievement," said Matthew Rae, MPP and parliamentary assistant to the minister of municipal affairs and housing

  • Ontario also announced a Development Charge Reduction Program linked to $8.8 billion in infrastructure funding over 10 years for municipalities that reduce development charges

Mortgage & Rate Watch

Rate

Bank of Canada Overnight Rate

2.25%

Prime Rate (most major banks)

4.45%

The Bank of Canada held at 2.25% last Wednesday, June 10, as widely expected. I was the fifth consecutive hold in 2026, following holds in January, March, April, and now June. The Bank cited a rare two-directional bind: GDP edged down 0.1% in the first quarter, weaker than expected, while oil prices from the Middle East conflict are pushing up inflation.

What this means for mortgage holders: the rate is likely to stay put for a while. Most major banks expect no meaningful changes in 2026. The more realistic scenario is a prolonged hold rather than a sharp rate increase, though the Bank has left the door open to cuts if U.S. trade restrictions weaken growth further.

Next Bank of Canada rate announcement: Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The full Monetary Policy Report is also released that day.

Home Tip of the Week

With rain in the forecast all week, a few minutes of prep now could save you a very soggy basement later. Here's where to focus:

  • Clear your gutters and downspouts — debris buildup sends water straight toward your foundation

  • Extend your downspouts at least 6 feet away from the house if they aren't already

  • Check the street drain closest to your home and clear any debris so runoff has somewhere to go

  • Check basement window wells for debris that could let water pool against the glass

  • Test your sump pump by pouring water into the pit to confirm the float kicks it on

  • Move valuables off the basement floor — documents, electronics, anything irreplaceable

  • Prep for possible outages — gather flashlights, batteries, and a portable charger before the storm hits, not after
