💉 Flu and COVID Shots Are Now Open to Everyone
As the weather turns colder, flu and COVID-19 season is getting started, and the free shots are now open to everyone six months and older who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario.
Available since Monday, October 26 at participating pharmacies, public health units, and doctor and nurse practitioner offices. Call ahead to check supply, or use the Ontario vaccine locations page.
Babies and toddlers from six months to two years old can't get a flu shot at a pharmacy. They go to a health care provider or Public Health.
Public Health will also offer both at Neighbourhood Bus visits and Saturday community clinics in November and early December. You can find that here.

🍂 Leaf Collection: Where Your Leaves Can Go This Fall
The leaves are down, the rakes are out, and where yours go depends on where you live. Here are the options, city by city.
Curbside in a bag
The Region's yard waste pickup runs every other week, opposite your garbage week, until the end of November or early December, depending on your schedule. Set bagged leaves out by 7 a.m. on collection day in paper yard waste bags or a reused garbage can.
Curbside, loose at the road
Waterloo: the City's optional loose leaf pickup started Monday and runs to Saturday, November 21, weather permitting. It collects boulevard tree leaves only. Crews visit each zone once. Have leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on the first day of your zone's week. Week 1 (October 26 to 31) is underway for zones W6, W8, E5, E7 and E8. Week 2 (November 2 to 7) is W1, W7, E4 and E6. Week 3 (November 9 to 14) is W3, W4, E2 and E3. Week 4 (November 16 to 21) is W2, W5 and E1. Find your zone on the City's map.
Kitchener: loose leaf pickup is only in designated neighbourhoods with lots of tree cover, and each one gets a single pickup week: November 2 to 6, November 9 to 13 or November 16 to 20. Rake to the road no earlier than the weekend before your date, and have it out by 7 a.m. on collection day. Neighbourhoods the City calls hot spots can rake out from October 17, with a last day of Monday, November 23. Use the City's leaf options lookup tool to see what you get.
Cambridge: the City program starts Monday, November 2 and is estimated to end by Friday, November 27. Look up your start date by address on the City's map. Rake leaves to the edge of the road, but only on the weekend before your collection period.
Drop-off
Kitchener: eight leaf drop-off sites are open every day during daylight hours until December 4:
Schaefer Park, Bloomingdale Rd.
Breithaupt Park and Kinsman Park, off Union St.
Kitchener Auditorium, Ottawa St. N. entrance
Meinzinger Park soccer fields, Homer Watson Blvd.
Lions Arena, Rittenhouse Rd.
Budd Park, 1111 Homer Watson Blvd.
Cherry Park, Strange St. and Waverly Rd.
Hofstetter Park, 40 Hofstetter Ave.
The Kitchener sites take leaves only. Empty your bags there and take them home, because no bags are accepted, paper ones included. Commercial haulers are not allowed, and anything else left behind counts as illegal dumping and can be fined.
Cambridge: the Cambridge Waste Management Centre, 201 Savage Dr., takes bagged leaves Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fees may apply.
Waterloo: the Region's drop-off site on Erb Street takes leaves for composting.
Can't rake? Waterloo's Home Support Services may be able to help. Call 519-579-6930 for eligibility and fees.
💡 Electricity Prices Drop on November 1, but the Rebate Drops Too
Winter electricity prices go down on Sunday, November 1, but the province's rebate on your bill shrinks at the same time.
Time-of-use prices: off-peak (weekdays 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and all day on weekends and holidays) falls from 9.8 to 9.1 cents per kilowatt-hour. Mid-peak (weekdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) falls from 15.7 to 14.6 cents. On-peak (weekdays 7 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.) falls from 20.3 to 18.9 cents.
The rebate: the Ontario Electricity Rebate drops from 23.5 per cent to 15.7 per cent. For a typical home using 700 kWh a month, it's worth about $23 a month, down from about $36.
What it adds up to: lower prices and a smaller rebate partly cancel out, so your bill may not fall the way the prices do.
Who gets the rebate: eligible households, farms, long-term care homes and small businesses. It's automatic for most customers and shows up as its own line on your bill. Not sure? Ask your utility or the Ontario Energy Board.
Other plans and help: tiered and ultra-low overnight prices changed too, and the OEB's calculator compares plans. From Sunday, November 15 to April 30, 2027, utilities can't disconnect residential customers for non-payment.
Lower rates are good news, but the smaller rebate means your total may not fall as much.
