🎒 Back to School: A New Kitchener School Zone, and Safety Reminders
School's back in today, so expect buses on the road and kids who might dart out without looking. Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School is now open at 20 Woolner Trail, bringing new speed limits, no-stopping zones, and a bus loading area to the surrounding streets, with a new crossing guard at Fairway Road and Woolner Trail. A few reminders for the season: ease off the gas near schools, leave room to react, and come to a full stop when a crossing guard's paddle goes up.
🤝 What Your City Is Doing About the Tariffs, and Why This Region Has More at Stake Than Most
Trade uncertainty is back in the headlines, and this time all three cities have something concrete to say.
Talks between Canada and the U.S. collapsed in late August after Washington moved ahead with a 50% duty on roughly $28 billion of Canadian exports. Canada's own matching tariffs kick in September 8.
Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo ranks fourth most exposed of any Canadian region, with 46.5% of our GDP tied to U.S. exports.
Kitchener has reactivated its Tariff and Trade Task Force and launched a resource hub for businesses and residents.
Cambridge now lets tariff-hit businesses defer property taxes with no penalty or interest, and Mayor Liggett sits on the Ontario Big City Mayors' Tariff Working Group.
Waterloo's $600,000 investment in the Accelerator Centre's health tech program is projected to create 120 new jobs.
All three cities are asking residents to buy local and Canadian where they can.
🏛️ The Aud Turns 75, and We Look Back at 75 Years of History
The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium turned 75 back in May, and this month the city's finally throwing the party.
The Aud was built after the Second World War in memory of the local men and women who served, and construction began in 1950. The 75 years since have made it a fixture of life here: home ice for the Rangers, home court for the KW Titans, home plate for the Panthers, and the site of more concerts and community nights than anyone could count.
To mark the 75th, the city is hosting a free community open house Wednesday, September 9, from 5 to 8 p.m., no registration required. It's a self-guided tour built around a passport challenge: hit all five interactive stops around the building and you'll unlock a photo op with the Memorial Cup, plus a free skate and complimentary popcorn to close out the night.
Every banner and every seat has a story behind it. Walk through on the 9th, and you're walking through 75 years of history, first dates, first goals, sold-out shows. If these walls could talk...
🔥 Cambridge Firefighters Going Door to Door This Fall, and a Real Rule Change Worth Knowing
Starting this month, don't be surprised if a firefighter knocks on your door. It's not a drill, and there's a genuine rule change behind it worth ten minutes of your time.
Every fall, Cambridge firefighters spend weeks walking neighbourhoods one house at a time as part of the department's ongoing residential fire and life safety outreach, checking that alarms are working and fielding whatever questions residents have.
The real news is a regulatory change: since the start of this year, Ontario's Fire Code covers a scenario it didn't before. Homes always needed a CO alarm if they had their own furnace, fireplace, or attached garage. Now, if your heat comes from a fuel-burning unit sitting somewhere outside the house itself, say a shed out back, that counts too, and you need an alarm. Placement changed too: it used to be enough to have one near where people sleep, but the rule now wants coverage on every floor of the house.
If it's been a while since you've thought about your alarms, this is as good a nudge as any.
🛠️ Waterloo's First-Ever Maker Faire Lands This Weekend, With a World Record in Tow
Uptown Waterloo is about to fill up with rocket scientists, welders, potters, and everyone in between.
Waterloo Public Square hosts the region's first-ever Maker Faire this Sunday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free and open to all ages.
It's part of a coordinated global debut: five brand-new Maker Faires are launching this September, in Waterloo, Calais, Orange County, Northwest Arkansas, and Porto.
The event is organized into six hands-on zones: Science & Technology, Trades & Manufacturing, Arts & Culture, Food & Beverage, Sustainability, and Youth Makers.
One of the headline participants is the University of Waterloo's Rocketry Team, fresh off setting a world record this year with Polaris, the highest-ever amateur liquid bi-propellant rocket, who'll be on hand to talk through the engineering behind it.
Rocket scientists and curious kids alike: this is a first-year event worth checking out.

🏗️ NEW: Fischer-Hallman Rd at New Dundee Rd (Kitchener). Closed to through traffic starting today, Tuesday, September 8 at 7 a.m., through approximately November 7. Open to businesses and residences, with pedestrian traffic maintained around the work zone. Details
🏗️ NEW: Margaret Ave at Fairfield Ave (Kitchener). Closed Wednesday, September 9 through Friday, September 11, for about three days as part of the Fairfield Ave reconstruction project. Access to residences and Giant Tiger maintained. Details
🏗️ Ira Needles Blvd resurfacing (Waterloo), as previously reported. University Ave W to Highland Rd W is fully closed with no access overnight, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., through Friday, September 18. Daytime hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) keep one lane open in each direction. The next stage (The Boardwalk to Erb St W) is expected to run roughly September 17–25. Details

Cornerstone CEO Bill Duce framed it as a market still favouring buyers with more selection than in past years, while noting Waterloo Region remains the tightest market among the areas Cornerstone covers. Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge are behaving differently enough that a local REALTOR's read on your specific neighbourhood matters more than the regional averages.
Mortgage & Rate Watch
The Bank of Canada held its overnight rate at 2.25% on September 2, the seventh consecutive hold, with the Bank Rate at 2.5% and the deposit rate at 2.20%. Big bank prime rates remain unchanged at 4.45%.

🏒 Rangers Home Opener Final Countdown
One preseason game left before the real thing starts.
The Rangers wrap up preseason on the road Saturday, September 12, against the Barrie Colts at Sadlon Arena.
The Kitchener Rangers open the 2026-27 season at home Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m., hosting the Owen Sound Attack, with the night including the raising of both the 2026 J. Ross Robertson Cup and Memorial Cup championship banners.

Coming off their first franchise championship last year, the Cambridge RedHawks open their title defense Saturday, September 12, 2 p.m., hosting the Hamilton Steel at Galt Arena Gardens.
