Watch the sky this morning, there's a thunderstorm risk before things settle into a good stretch, sunny and warming up right through Friday. Then the weekend gets iffy again, right as Cambridge's rescheduled Canada Day fireworks are set to go off Saturday night. After getting rained out on a weeknight, at least round two lands on a Saturday. Add 4,200 athletes rolling into town for the Ontario Summer Games and a full week of free things to do downtown, and there's plenty to plan around either way.

🏅 Waterloo Region's about to host 4,200 of Ontario's best young athletes
For four days starting this week, our arenas, fields, and courts belong to the next generation of Ontario athletes.
The Waterloo Region 2026 Ontario Summer Games run Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, August 2, over the Civic Holiday long weekend.
About 4,200 athletes aged 12 to 18 compete in 23 sports across more than 19 venues in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.
Wilfrid Laurier University hosts wushu, field lacrosse, and flag football, with student residences serving as the Athletes' Village.
The Opening Ceremony runs Thursday, July 30, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at University Stadium, Laurier. Ticketed, $12, free for children under 2.
Admission to the sporting events themselves is Free.

Economic Development
💰 A $40 million federal investment is heading to 23 regional businesses, including 16 in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Elmira
For companies that have built parts locally for decades, this is a signal that Ottawa wants that work to keep happening here.
Ottawa is splitting nearly $40.5 million between 23 businesses across the Waterloo and Brant regions, through the Regional Defence Investment Initiative and the Regional Tariff Response Initiative.
Sixteen of the recipients are based in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Elmira.
The funding supports companies moving into defence, security, and AI technology, and helps others affected by U.S. tariffs.
The announcement was made Thursday, July 23 at Kitchener's XL Tool, a longtime local supplier of stamping dies and tooling to the auto sector, which is putting more than $4 million toward expanding into defence and aerospace work.
Federal Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon made the announcement, joined by local MPs and Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.
A vote of confidence in the Region's manufacturing base, from a government looking to keep the work close to home.

For any parent staring down a week of "what are we doing today," this one's already solved.
King Street West (College to Young) and Carl Zehr Square are pedestrian-only through Friday, July 31, with daily programming starting at 11 a.m.
A splash pad runs every day, bring a towel, plus picnic tables and games set up along the block all afternoon.
Today, Tuesday, July 28: an extended Live at Lunch (11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.), the Family Splash Jam (4–7 p.m.), and Drew Ripley's Big Balloon Show at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, July 29: a country swing lesson at 5 p.m., line dancing at 6 p.m., and live music from Jessie T at 7 p.m.
Thursday, July 30: the Love Local Market (2–8 p.m.) and an afternoon games competition with prizes.
Friday, July 31: mariachi performances, a Lotería (Mexican bingo) night, and DTK Latin Heat, a salsa, bachata, and merengue dance social, closing out the week.
Admission is Free every day.

🏗️ NEW: Lois Street closes for resurfacing (Kitchener). Lois Street, between Frederick Street and Rosemount Drive, closed as of yesterday, Monday, July 27, running through Friday, August 21. Local access maintained as much as possible.
🏗️ NEW: Fischer-Hallman Road closes between Plains Road and New Dundee Road (Kitchener/North Dumfries). Full closure, closed as of yesterday, Monday, July 27, running through Friday, September 18. Detour via New Dundee Road, Trussler Road, and Huron Road.
🏗️ Fountain Street North closure at the Kossuth/Fairway roundabout is in effect (Woolwich). This closure was flagged in last week's issue with a start date of July 27. It's now active, running for approximately 10 weeks. Airport access (YKF) is maintained via detour, but expect delays.
🏗️ NEW: Alvin Street closes for sanitary lateral service work (Waterloo). Alvin Street at 145 Alvin St. (Mackay Crescent to Mackay Crescent) closes Tuesday, July 28 through Friday, July 31. No through traffic, the west sidewalk is also closed.
🏗️ NEW: Willowdale Avenue closes for pipe work (Waterloo). Willowdale Avenue at 212 Willowdale Ave. (Dixie Crescent to Ashcroft Place) closes Thursday, July 30 through Friday, July 31. No through traffic.
🏗️ NEW: Albert Street closes for a special event (Waterloo). Albert Street, between Central Street and Seagram Drive, closes Thursday, July 30 only. No through traffic.
🏗️ NEW: Osprey Drive intersection closes for storm sewer repair (Waterloo). The intersection of Osprey Drive at Waterbury Lane closes Tuesday, August 4 through Thursday, August 6. No through traffic.
🏗️ NEW: Elgin Street North closes for utility work (Cambridge). Elgin Street North, between Pollock Avenue and Main Street, closes Wednesday, July 29, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., for utility updates. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use alternative routes.

What the numbers tell us: Prices are still down across the board from a year ago, and that's true in every city and every property type. Condos in Cambridge are the one exception, holding almost flat. If you're buying, this remains a market with some room to negotiate. If you're selling, pricing realistically against these comparables still matters more than holding out for last year's numbers.

The weekend home check: catch hidden leaks before they cost you
We've had a good amount of rain lately, which makes this the best weekend to play home detective. Finding a moisture issue today can save you thousands in mould remediation and structural repairs later.
Grab a flashlight and spend 10 minutes checking these four hidden zones:
The ceiling scan: Look for fresh yellow-brown rings or sagging drywall on your top-floor ceilings.
The baseboard sniff test: Walk your basement or lower level. A musty smell or peeling paint near the floor means water is wicking in.
The window thumb press: Press your thumb against indoor window sills. Spongy wood means your exterior caulking has failed.
The foundation puddle watch: Check your downspouts outside. If they aren't dumping water at least six feet from your walls, that rain is soaking straight into your foundation.
Catching a leak early turns a massive contractor bill into a simple, cheap fix, a tube of caulk or a downspout extension.

🔋 Waterloo researchers are digging into why lithium-ion batteries fail, and how to stop the fires before they start
As AI-driven data centres multiply across the region and beyond, the massive battery banks that keep them running are becoming a fire risk most people never think about, until something goes wrong.
Dr. Vinny Gupta and his team at the University of Waterloo's Fire Research Facility are studying thermal runaway, a chain reaction where one failing battery cell overheats its neighbours and can trigger a much larger fire.
Data centres pack thousands of lithium-ion cells together for backup power, concentrating a risk that's manageable in smaller numbers.
The team runs controlled experiments that push cells into failure on purpose, capturing data on exactly how and why these fires ignite and travel from cell to cell.
The aim is to give manufacturers the specifics they need to design around the problem, through better heat management, cell spacing, monitoring, and earlier warning systems, before failures happen in the field.
Fellow Waterloo engineers Dr. Kyle Daun and Dr. Michael Pope are also involved in the work.
A close look at a risk nobody's talking about yet, so bigger data centres don't mean bigger fires.
